Bee Prepared for Spring

Spring is such an incredible time – flowers begin to emerge from their dormant hideaways, baby animals are in abundance, and for beekeepers, it’s the season when things get busy! Even though snow may be on the ground in some regions, experienced beekeepers know that now is a great time to start preparing for your spring beekeeping season. Whether you need new beekeeping equipment, your safety gear needs an upgrade or you want to get your name down for a new package of bees, it’s good practice to get in early.

So what’s the hurry?

Here are some of our top tips for spring preparation:

  1. Your brood box needs to be set up and painted/oiled well before it becomes home to a bee colony.
  2. Nucs or bee packages need to be ordered from a reputable supplier well in advance – waiting lists can quickly become long.
  3. If you’re a newbie, you’ll want to get as familiar as possible with your hive, work out the best location, and learn as much as you can.

Bee colonies reproduce in spring

If you already have a colony it may soon be expanding. It’s a great idea to start planning how you will accommodate your new apiary edition before your new colony arrives (we’ve already been hearing about swarms in warmer areas).

Will you let your hive swarm, or will you split your hive?

If you want a second colony, now’s the perfect time to order your new hive.
